EAERE-ETH European Winter School on
Natural resources and development in resource-rich countries

The fourth EAERE-ETH Winter School will take place from January 22 to Janurary 27, 2023 at Monte Verità in Ascona, Switzerland. The topic covered by the 2021/2022 Winter School is "Natural resources and development in resource-rich countries".

The purpose of the 2021/2022 Winter School is to present methods for studying environmental and resource economics in a natural resource wealth and economic growth framework, along with current results regarding the history of natural resources and economic development, the role of political institutions and systems in determining outcomes in resource-rich countries, and the links between resource wealth and conflict. In addition to discussing the topics and research results, special attention will be given to the latest methodological approaches used to answer the research questions. In particular, the course will explore ways of uncovering causal links between resource wealth and socio-economic outcomes, and some of the cutting-edge datasets published in the past years.

The Winter School will first provide students with an overview of the problems and methods addressed during the School. The Winter School is aimed at PhD students and Postdocs. The course material will be presented in lectures on methodology and applications. Students will work supervised on tailored exercises and receive valuable feedback on their work from fellow students and from the School professors. Students will also have the opportunity to present their research. The Winter School especially aims at a highly interactive exchange of the students with experts in the field.
